( it's true that it is often said that he who controls education controls past history. In any case, about Japon, we can obviously see the sensitive problem of the war crimes...
About sensationalism, we have TF1 here
(but it's true that I have seen on a US TV channel ( thanks to the satellite) images from the war in Iraq: they had installed a video camero on a tank and were filming. It was as if we were in a video game, Battlefield, Medal of Honor and their ilk, with explosions, things moving all over the place etc.. ! )

contrebalancerait l'information sensationaliste
Do you not think that there is a sizeable amount of sensationalism amongst audio-visual press? Indeed, when one sees other reportages ( not sure, if that's english, "coverage" maybe) centered on more general news, this portrait of an arrogant and pretentious america is much more nuanced by the questionnings of its own press about the malfunctions of its services, either private or public.
Which is, by the way, a good thing in itself, although I am more sceptical about it when it is denouncing security flaws which can lead to an atmosphere of alarmism and paranoia=> It is possible to raise the question so as to solve the problem, but to got as far as pointing out the places or methods to bypass (to exploit the flaw) seems so me like a crime incentive.
The freedom to inform should be double by an other than just moral responsibilization in the case where the information could lead to a crime or terrorist attack=> a responsible information, in a way, that would counternbalance the sensationalist(ic) information
(not easy to translate, so mistakes may remain)

and this cult of information does not solely exist in the USA: we have less information over a long period of time, everything is presented as incredible, extraordinary, result: we are blasé...

Rolling Eyes
I have seen somewhere ( and somewhere serious, else I would not be gossiping on a sensitive subject, but I think it's true) that more that half of the japanase under 20 were sure that their country was allied to the States during WW2
